Rajkot, March 5 With less than a month to go for their annual examination, Rajkot's Dangar Homeopathic College students have locked horns with the authorities over a demand to remove the principal.

The students, who alleged that principal Arvind Bhatt's behaviour is rude and abusive, have threatened to go on a hunger strike from Saturday, if their demand was not met.

For the last four days, they have been organising protest demonstrations by boycotting classes. In the last couple of days, they sat on dharnas at the college campus located on Jamnagar highway near Ghanteshwar Park and at Saurashtra University (SU) campus. They have already rejected SU Vice-Chancellor Dr Kamlesh Joshipura's proposal to launch an inquiry into the matter.

According to reports, the students have also rejected the college trustees' offer to take away powers of Bhatt and allow him to continue with teaching activities. They have been adamant on their demand of his ouster. The National Students Union of India (NSUI), which is supporting the striking students, said they would not compromise on their demand. “The behaviour of Bhatt is unacceptable. He cannot be allowed to continue,” said Pal Ambaliya, NSUI general secretary, Saurashtra-Kutch.

According to students, the principal often use abusive language, subjected them to unreasonable punishments and would even slap them. “We were often made stand in sun for long hours,” said a student. Others alleged that once Bhatt gave them homework to write 2,000 pages in four days.

However, the principal termed these allegations as baseless, and said he has been targeted for introducing passing marks system for preliminary examination. The college recently made a rule that a student must score minimum 35 marks in each subject in preliminary examination to appear for the finals.
