The students who did their BEd from RBU and are now teaching in schools say their future is at stake. Till now, they have been enjoying special financial benefits like extra increment annually as do BEd-qualified teachers. Now, they fear the extra increment they got might have to be returned to the government.

Paramita De completed her BEd from RBU in 1997-98 and has been working in a secondary school at Canning for the past three years after clearing the SSC. “What about my future? I am a B Ed-qualified teacher and have enjoyed special increments for the last two years. Now I will be treated as a non-Bed,” Paramita told The Indian Express.

She said the former students of RBU should come under one umbrella for filing a petition in a higher court against the actions of RBU.

Rupan Chakraborty, who secured his BEd degree in 1998-99, will appear in the SSC examination this year. He is stunned to learn after nine years that his BEd degree is invalid. “We will raise our voice against the RBU,” he said adding that the former students are trying to gather in the RBU campus on January 27 for protest.

When contacted, RBU registrar Dr Tapati Mukherjee said: “We are waiting for a copy of the court’s order. Nothing can be said right now.”
