Kolkata Though the 12-hour Bangla bandh called by CPM-backed Socialist Unity Center of India (SUCI) did not have much of an impact on the transport sector in Kolkata, the suburban railway services was affected to a certain extent.

The main railway terminals at Sealdah and Howrah bore a partially empty look on Thursday. In a few areas, SUCI supporters put up blockades on railway tracks. They stopped trains in Eastern Railway’s Sealdah (south) and Howrah division by throwing banana leaves on the overhead electric poles. Several long distance trains were also delayed in Howrah.

Normal services resumed 10.30 am in Howrah and around 11 am in Sealdah. “In the morning, there were blockades at several points. But things were brought under control by afternoon,” said Binod Sharma of Eastern Railways.

The commuters as usual faced a harrowing time. “I had to wait for over an hour to reach my destination,” said Manik Das, a commuter from Lakshmikantapur to Sealdah South.

Trains were obstructed at Lakhikantapur, Diamond Harbour, Canning, Budge Budge, Ballygunge, Pyaradanga, Kalayani, Barrckpore and Ranaghat-Bongaon among others. On the main line at Rishra, Uttarpara, Khanyan and Banshberia on Banel-Katwa section blockades were put up. Similarly services were hampered at Gobra, Belur, Murarai and Rajgram.
