For the water reserves to last till the next monsoon, the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) has made a 7 per cent cut in water, which is besides the 10 per cent cut imposed by the Irrigation Department.
The water cut imposed by the Irrigation Department on the cities and supply network on the Ulhas river basin is also extended to those areas in Thane that are serviced by MIDC water supply network. The areas affected by the cut include industrial belt in Trans-Thane Creek Complex, Wagle Estate, Dombivli, Ambernath, Badlapur, Kalyan-Bhiwandi. The civic jurisdiction of Ulhasnagar, Ambernath, Badlapur, Thane, Navi Mumbai and Kalyan Dombivli are also affected by the water cut.
Most of the cities have been subjected to water cut for one or more days in a week. Owing to its multiple water supply sources, Thane city has mitigated the water shortage to once in a fortnight as compared to other neighbouring cities. “Due to complete water cut for almost entire day, pressure on the supply for the following day is also affected due to dry mains and reservoirs,” said K D Lala, city engineer for Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC).
Severely affected is Kalyan-Dombivli that has water cut twice a week — on Tuesday and Friday. On Tuesdays, the cut is on the supply network of Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation sourced from Ulhas river as per the directions of the Irrigation Department. Whereas on Fridays, the water cut is on the network of MIDC which is also sourced from Ulhas river. The water cut is from 6 am to 12 am, for 18 hours a day. The after affects of the cut are witnessed on the following day as it takes water supply to resume normal supply only in the evening. A cut of two days in a week in Kalyan-Dombivli also affects two more days of supply, thus resulting in only three days of normal supply in a week.
