Chandigarh, January 8
The Cooperative Sugar Mills Workers Federation, Punjab, has threatened to hold a statewide demonstration after January 20 to press the government to operationalise six cooperative sugar mills which are closed in the state. “Before coming to power, the SAD-BJP party had promised that it would operationalise all the sugar mills in the state which were closed down. But they did not bother to honour its promise, leaving the future of workers of these mills uncertain,” Karnail Singh, president of the Cooperative Sugar Mills Workers Federation of Punjab told newspersons today.
Out of the total 15 sugar mills in the cooperative sector in Punjab, six sugar mills had remained shut down for past several years which include mills in Patiala, Tarn Taran, Zeera, Faridkot, Jagraon and Budhlada. It was alleged that the government had not paid salaries of regular workers.
