The farmers sat on a dharna at 11:45 am at Hajipur Chowk and lifted it at 3:45 pm after the Dasuya SDM and DSP Harpreet Singh Mander visited the spot and assured them that their demands would be met. Even after the lifting of the dharna, the highway could not be cleared of traffic jam for about three hours.
Jagmohan Singh Ghumman, president of Ganna Sanghrash Committee, Dasuya, said sugar mill authorities have not been following the calendar system and the slips, which were an entry pass to the mill for crushing the sugarcane, were being given to farmers of Gurdaspur. The farmers alleged that surveyors have been earning between Rs 6,000 and 7,000 per trolley by selling the slips to outsiders.
