The murder angle came to light after the police said that Jain's hands were tied in front of her, when her body was found hanging in her room in the college hostel premises. The police said there was little reason known for Jain to take the extreme step.
Incidentally, sources in the police said that Jain was engaged and was to be married on March 13 to her fiancé in Rajasthan.
Meanwhile, her parents and family came to Vadodara on Saturday to meet the police and take her body back home for the last rites. On Friday evening, Jain's colleagues found her hanging dead in her room. There was also a suicide note addressed to her mother that said she was “wearied with her own body”.
Vadodara Deputy Superintendent of Police B S Bhabhor said the police began to suspect murder after they found the victim's hands tied. “It looked like a suicide, but rarely do the victim's tie their own hands. Also we are looking into whether there could have been some problems with her colleagues in the college,” Bhabhor said. He said they were presently recording statements from all the lecturers and officials of the Sumandeep Vidyapith.
Sources in the Waghodia police further said that Jain’s father, an irrigation engineer in Kota in Rajasthan, in his statement to the police had said that his daughter suffered no illnesses or had any financial problems. A police officer on grounds of anonymity said, “Jain actually went home for two months to study for her masters programme in Dental sciences. However, she committed suicide a day after she returned to Piparia.”
He added that the postmortem report also stated hanging as the cause of her death. The police have now sealed off the room and have sent a number of items to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) for further testing. According to Bhabhor, the police wanted to leave no angle unturned, particularly since this is the second suicide in the region in recent times, after a student committed suicide in a similar manner.
