Surat, January 31 After an automobile businessman Mahesh Makrana (26) committed suicide in the Varachha area on Tuesday, the police have registered a case against six moneylenders for causing mental and physical harassment to the victim. The police action follows a complaint lodged by Mahesh's uncle Dhirubhai Makrana (a resident of Thakordwar society in Varachha) on Thursday against one Pratik Thakor and his five friends with the Varachha Police.

Mahesh was a resident of Umiyadham Society, A K Road, in Varachha. Police discovered his body in an Esteem car near Mohan Chaal at Mini Bazaar. A post-mortem at the SMIMER hospital revealed that the deceased had consumed poison.

A suicide note was also found from Mahesh's trouser pocket, which said that six persons, identified as Pratik and Parimal Thakor, Paresh Thakar, Jayesh Nakranai (all residents of Kapodara), Bhupendra Malaviya and Praful Sawaliya (both residents of Varachha) were physically and mentally harassing him for failing to repay his debts.

Police said Mahesh was running an automobile business in Varachha and had borrowed money from Pratik Thakor and his friends to overcome a financial crisis. But he was not doing well and was facing problems in repaying the loan, as a result of which the six started harassing him.

"After primary investigations, we have found that all the six accused were regularly torturing Mahesh. They had forcefully taken possession of his shop and even threatened to kill him. Mahesh was under depression since a couple of days and this might have driven him to suicide," said Varachha police inspector J A Jadeja.
