Vadodara After 62 students of a government primary school in Batakwada village suffered from food poisoning on Tuesday following consumption of milk served to them under a government scheme, the school remained closed on Wednesday.

Four students are still under observation at the a government hospital in Santrampur.

The district officials have not yet been able to solve the mystery as to how 92 pouches containing contaminated milk and having no date of manufacturing printed reached the school from the Panchmahals Dairy.

Meanwhile, the villagers across Santrampur taluka boycotted the milk supplied by the Panchmahals District Co-operative Milk Producers’ Union.

“Though other schools functioned in the region as usual, milk was not delivered at schools today owing to the protest by the villagers,” said P V Vasaiya, the taluka development officer, Santrampur.

Milk samples have been sent to the Food and Drug Laboratory at Godhra for quality check.

“The weather is not hot enough to spoil the milk by noon. It was certainly a carton of stale milk pouches that caused the problem. The issue is being investigated by the health officials,” said R D Vankar, the district education officer.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the milk supplied to the schools is not kept at the required temperature.

Panchmahals Collector, Milind Torwane, said, “The teachers who are supposed to check the milk’s quality before giving it to the students do not do this. Also, the supply of milk from the dairy to the school needs a revision.”

Meanwhile, the dairy officials met the district collector on the issue of unmarked pouches.

“The dairy officials said the markings on the pouches were made with rubber stamps and they were possibly erased. But we will look into the matter,” said Torwane.

The sources said the teachers will shortly undergo training programme to learn to check the quality of food.
