Surat, January 8 Surat Police have taken a serious note of the hazards posed by kite twines coated with powdered glass (manja) and with the help of an NGO, Prayas, initiated efforts for making Uttarayan safe this year. A large number of people have been injured and children killed when struck by manja thread in different parts across the city.

PRAYAS has now printed and distributed 4,000 pamphlets carrying tips on how to remain safe during Uttarayan. “‘We have distributed pamphlets in schools, colleges, restaurants, temples and residential areas, informing people about the precautionary steps to be taken to avoid such mishaps,” said Darshan Desai, president of Prayas.

He said they have also requested those involved in the thread polishing business to refrain from using glass powder to coat the twines. “We are getting good support from those associated with the thread business. We have put up hoardings of ‘Safe Uttarayan’ at different road junctions across the city. Some of them also say how to ride motorcycles safely, and what steps to take when one is injured by these strings,” he said.

Surat Police Commissioner RMS Brar said, “We have requested those involved in polishing the threads not to use glass powder, as it is harmful to humans as well as birds. “We have also taken steps against those who are involved in catching kites with the help of bamboos on roads. The Varachha flyover will remain closed on Uttarayan day as majority of the mishaps take place here,” he said.

Manja casualties
January 6: Adil Shaikh (20), a resident of Moraji Vasahat in Udhna, sustained severe burns after coming in contact with a high tension overhead electric wire near Udhna railway station while trying to catch a kite from a stationary goods train. He died in the Hospital later.

December 30: Vatsal (5), a resident of Shantinagar in Katargam, was returning home with his father Nilesh Radadiya on a motorcycle from Varachha. A manja twine slit his throat near the Varachha flyover. He died as a result of heavy blood loss.

December 27: Shahrukh Shah (10) was flying kite with his friends on the terrace of his apartment in Umarwada at Dindoli. He fell on the ground while trying to catch a kite. He was declared brought dead at the New Civil Hospital.
