PRAYAS has now printed and distributed 4,000 pamphlets carrying tips on how to remain safe during Uttarayan. “‘We have distributed pamphlets in schools, colleges, restaurants, temples and residential areas, informing people about the precautionary steps to be taken to avoid such mishaps,” said Darshan Desai, president of Prayas.
He said they have also requested those involved in the thread polishing business to refrain from using glass powder to coat the twines. “We are getting good support from those associated with the thread business. We have put up hoardings of ‘Safe Uttarayan’ at different road junctions across the city. Some of them also say how to ride motorcycles safely, and what steps to take when one is injured by these strings,” he said.
Surat Police Commissioner RMS Brar said, “We have requested those involved in polishing the threads not to use glass powder, as it is harmful to humans as well as birds. “We have also taken steps against those who are involved in catching kites with the help of bamboos on roads. The Varachha flyover will remain closed on Uttarayan day as majority of the mishaps take place here,” he said.
