Ahmedabad A surat resident has been accused of raping a 16-year-old Dalit girl from Odhav. Although the incident took place nearly four months ago, a complaint in this regard was lodged on Tuesday, when the victim’s parents came to know that she was pregnant.

Sources said, city-based builder Batok Rana had organised a get-together at his Shridhar society residence in Bapunagar about four months ago. Several people had come to attend the function from Surat, in which Rana’s daughter was also present..

The driver, Vishnu Desai, allegedly took her to a deserted lavatory in the house and repeatedly raped her. Desai later threatened the victim against revealing this to anybody.

On Tuesday, the girl complained of pain in her abdomen and was rushed to the Shardaben Hospital. On examining her, doctors found that she had suffered a miscarriage. “It was then that the victim told her parents about the four-month-old incident,” said Inspector K P Gajipara.

The police have booked Desai on charges of rape and criminal intimidation, Gajipara said, adding the accused will be arrested soon.

Barawala girl was raped before her murder, say police

Three days after the body of a nine-year-old girl from Barawala was found in the outskirts of Khamidana village in rural Ahmedabad, police said on Wednesday that the schoolgirl was raped before being murdered.

“The victim’s postmortem report confirms rape. At present, we are questioning some of the key suspects in the case," said Deputy Superintendent of Police J D Jhala. He is supervising the Barawala police investigations into the case.

The postmortem report states the girl died of strangulation, the police said. Based on the complaint filed by the victim's father, the police had earlier registered a case of murder. “After receiving the postmortem report, we have included charges of rape in the FIR,” Jhala said. The girl, a Class III student of a government primary school at Barawala, had gone to school on January 2. “In her recess break, the girl had come to her house for lunch. She went missing after leaving back for her school,” he said.

Sources in the police said that involvement of somebody well-acquainted with the victim's family is also being probed. — ENS
