This could perhaps be the first time that auto drivers have been specifically selected for community policing.
The district police had organised a seminar at the Surendranagar Town Hall where auto drivers were given identity cards in the presence of senior district police officials, including Superintendent of Police Ashok Kumar Yadav. The FoPs were briefed about the kind of activities they were supposed to do.
Talking to Newsline, Yadav said: "In cities and towns, rickshaw drivers are the ones who will be on the roads most of the time. Generally, they come to know about any suspicious activities in the city first. We can also get information about persons involved in criminal activities like house break-ins and terrorism from them."
He said that if the police get such information on time, necessary preventive steps can be taken at the earliest. "So, with the intention of making policing efficient and effective, we have made them FoPs," he added.
