Vadodara The Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) is all set to turn the Sursagar Lake (in the picture) into a major attraction for the citizens and the tourists, in 2009. Following the decision to re-introduce boating facilities, the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) has decided to revamp the periphery of the lake. The beautification project is expected to begin by June 2009 and tenders for the same will be floated soon.

Right from the strengthened periphery to the provision of basic amenities, visitors at Sursagar will have it all. Importantly, the decision on having food kiosks at the venue will be taken after elaborate discussions, said VMC officials.

In the past, the Maharaja Sayajirao University Architecture department had taken the initiative to beautify the lake, located in the heart of the city. The students had come up with different ideas to turn the lake into a major tourist attraction under the ‘Aavo Sursagar Sachaviye’ slogan. But, nothing concrete came out of it.

But this time, the VMC has taken up the project very seriously.

“We had all the plans in place, and floating the tender to start the boating facility was just a beginning. We are all set to change the face of Sursagar lake and several things have already been lined up,” said VMC Commissioner M K Das.

He added: “We would like to beautify the lake in a way that it does not take away its heritage looks and at the same time provides all the modern facilities.”

Das, however, said that the major concern is about the food kiosks.

“While they (the vendors) are the inevitable part of Sursagar, there are several issues attached to their presence. That is why we have not decided anything about them as of now. But we will try our best to come out with a plan so that no one is affected,” he said.

In past, the shifting of the vendors was a major issue and some of them were shifted near Badamdi Baug.
