This is how a complaint lodged with the Bapunagar police on Wednesday describes the incident that took place early in the morning. The complaint, however, does not mention that constables with the city police are not authorised to carry firearms and that the weapon used was a .32 bore private revolver.
Neither does the complaint mention that Gadhvi stands suspended from his job.
According to sources, about a fortnight ago, an Amraiwadi-based bootlegger had accused Gadhvi of allegedly extorting from him Rs 2 lakh for permission to run his ‘illegal’ business safely. Even this does not find mention in the complaint. “Nothing as such has come out during my preliminary investigations so far,” explained Inspector L P Gandhe of the Bapunagar police when told about the allegations against Gadhvi.
“I know that Gadhvi has a shady past and has been suspended earlier. But in this case, I am considering the circumstantial evidence that supports the complaint filed by him,” Gandhe added.
In his complaint filed with the Bapunagar police while ‘surrendering’ his private revolver, Gadhvi said he was on ‘extended’ night duty on Tuesday night.
“My boss (Odhav PI) had asked me to keep watch on bootleggers in the city,” states the complaint.
Gadhvi and two other constables of the Odhav police’s Surveillance Squad, Amir Odedera and Gopram, were on late-night patrol. Interestingly, while Gadhvi was in his private car, the other two were on a ‘private’ motorcycle.
The trio tried to stop a speeding Verna near Odhav but it escaped. “A suspicious police team led by Gadhvi started chasing the vehicle. While Gadhvi was leading in his Maruti Zen, Odedera and Gopram followed on the motorcycle,” the complaint states.
When they reached near Dinesh Chamber four-roads on India Colony Road in Bapunagar, Gadhvi took out his private revolver and fired at the vehicle twice, the complaint mentions.
Inspector Gandhe, however, supported Gadhvi, saying that it was a licensed revolver and he (Gadhvi) had surrendered himself. “The incident, therefore, does not amount to any offence under the Arms Act,” he added.
