Lucknow The government has reinstated head of the ophthalmology department of Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj University (CSMMU), Deepak Kumar, who was removed after cataract surgeries held at a health centre run by the hospital had caused infections. The suspended doctors, Kanchan Banodha and Shalini Singh, of the department have also been re-instated.

The order came on Saturday after a two-member committee headed by S K Sachan, HoD, Ophthalmology, Kanpur Medical College, submitted its report to the CSMMU authorities giving a clean chit to these doctors. However, the inquiry committee found presence of pseudomonas aerugimosa bacteria among affected patients’ eyes. On February 3, 25 people had undergone operation at a health centre in Sarojini Nagar. Three days later, they complained of redness and swelling in their operated eyes.
