Rajesh Yadav, 14, in Standard IX of St Joseph High School, Juhu, had allegedly bunked on Friday. The principal summoned his father on Monday and suspended Rajesh for a day, after which the latter committed suicide at his home in Moragaon, Juhu, police said.
“After Rajesh Yadav bunked school on Friday, a teacher spotted him roaming near a bus depot in his school uniform. The school authorities contacted his father and asked him to meet the principal. Ramnarayan Yadav, who has a tile polishing business, did so on Monday morning,” said Deepak Katkade, senior police inspector.
The principal, Sister Beena CJ, spoke to both father and son. Rajesh failed to explain his absence and the principal suspended him for the day and asked Ramnarayan to take him home and counsel him against such conduct.
Yadav dropped Rajesh at home and left for work. Rajesh went upstairs to his room, saying he wanted to sleep. At 11.30 am, his younger brother found him hanging from the ceiling.
A mob of angry residents and parents agitated at the school, demanding action against the authorities. “Most children complain the school authorities suspend them for trivial reasons. Such stress likely led to Rajesh committing suicide,” Sanjay Pardeshi of Moragaon said.
Ramnarayan Yadav, however, refused to blame the school authorities. “My wife and I are both semiliterate and we save to send our children to school. If Rajesh was bunking then it was proper that the school summoned me and took disciplinary action on him,” he said.
The principal said, “If a student bunks and something happens to him on the street, the parents might hold us responsible. A teacher had seen Rajesh in uniform and we summoned his father so that we could involve him in the process of encouraging him to be regular.”

He was from Jaunpur and staying with his uncle Ramprakash Shukla, who claimed he was a student of Viva College, Virar, but the police said his name is not in the college records. I disagree, being expelled for a day is not a harsh punishment. After all it was the student who broke the rules. I think the school acted in a responsible manner Notifying the parent was the right thing to do. As a mother I would want to know if my son has bunked schoool. No one can predict how someone is going to react Do you expect the school to ignore the wrong doings of a student. Parents too have equal responsibility in bringing up a child
This once again puts in forefront the sensitive nature of todays generation. Schools must change to cope up the requirements of this new breed of students. Suspension for a day is a crazy action by the school authorities if the student is absent for trival reasons. It is time the education department conduct survey of such schools and put an end to crazy methods of punishing students. It is sad that the parents have lost their son in this manner. My sympathies to them. Lot of explanation is required from the concerned principal for this novel method of punishment.
