Surat, March 4 A K Sharma, the railway driver who was suspended after 16 people were run over by a train driven by him at the Karakhadi Bridge, has said he was not aware of the accident at that time.

Sharma visited the Surat Railway police station and gave a statement on Monday.

He said, “I was shocked when I came to know that 16 people were run over by the train (the Kutch Express). I have not been able to sleep since then. The inquiry by different officials has made matters worse. I had not seen anyone on the track when the train passed the Karakhadi Bridge. The visibility in the area was also poor. I came to know about the accident only after reaching Mumbai the next day. Even my family members are in a state of shock.”

Sharma in his statement to the railway police inspector H M Patel also said that since the train was not picking adequate speed, assistant driver Arun Kumar, had gone to repair the switch in the engine when the train crossed Udhna Railway Station.

The incident occurred between Surat and Udhna stations last Wednesday. After the accident, the railways suspended the driver and his assistant, as they did not inform the authorities about the incident.
