Terming it as a 'deliberate attempt' by the Australian media to ridicule Hindus globally in the wake of the controversial alleged racial slur, the students of Dharma Sangh Shiksha Mandal in Durgakund area of the city burnt an effigy of the Australian all rounder.
Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh had allegedly called Symonds a ‘monkey’ during the Sydney Test and was penalised with a three-match ban by the International Cricket Council (ICC).
“The Indian government should promptly register a protest with the Australian government, and should also demand a stern action against the daily, which published the objectionable picture,” said Jagjitan Pandey, the secretary of the school.
The protesting students were attired in traditional dresses and raised anti- Australia slogans during the protest march.
An Australian newspaper, Courier Mail, published a picture of Symonds with his face superimposed on Hanuman’s body, and ran the caption “Symonds baney Hanuman”, which was beamed by some Indian TV channels on Monday night.
