Of the total 101 Senate members, 16 posts were vacant. Out of the 85 members, 83 cast their votes. The two members who did not vote were Chancellor Mrunalini Puar and R K Pathak, chairman of the Gujarat Secondary Education Board. Pathak being transferred, the post is vacant at present.

The voting took place at the MSU Head Office, where closed circuit television cameras were installed.

Among the upsets was the defeat of Prof I I Pandya, a Syndicate member for the last five terms. He lost in the teacher’s category. In the open category, Jigar Inamdar was elected with 47 votes, Rajesh Parekh with 39 votes, Mukesh Pandya with 45 votes, Dinesh Yadav with 59 votes and Prakash Shah with 48 votes. Deepak Shah lost to Rajesh Parekh by one vote after a tie forced recounting of votes.

In the professor’s category, Prof S K Tewari, officiating dean, Faculty of Journalism and Communication, won with 42 votes, defeating Prof Kiran Joshi from the Faculty of Management Studies.

In the teacher’s category, the winners were Rameshwari Pandya, who was elected for the first time with 37 votes, Adeesh Jain with 35 votes, Amit Dholakia with 37 votes and Shirish Kulkarni with 36 votes.

Jignesh Shah got the highest votes (58) in the board of accounts’ category, while Kamlesh Mehta was elected with 50 and Rajnikant Darji with 47 votes.

In the postgraduate studies and research category, except for one post for the representative in the Education and Psychology, Fine Arts, Performing Arts and Social Work departments, all three candidates won uncontested.

Shailendra Khushwaha from the Faculty of Fine Arts got 67 votes against R C Patel who got 36 votes for the postgraduate representative in Education and Psychology, Fine Arts, Performing Arts and Social Work.

Nikhil Desai won uncontested the postgraduate representative for the Faculty of Community Studies and Science as also Dr Virsingh Alathia, representative for the Faculty of Medicine.

In the principal category, K S Agrawal was declared winner uncontested, while in the extra mural studies category, Rajnikant Darji, Jignesh Solanki and Kamlesh Mehta won.
