Vadodara As the members of the M S University Syndicate met on Friday for the first time after the elections, the issue over the difference of Rs 11. 42 crore between last year’s closing balance and this year’s opening balance of the university accounts dominated the meeting.

Even as the issue related to discrepancies in the university accounts was discussed for about 45 minutes, Vice-Chancellor Professor Ramesh Goyal said it was only a printing mistake.

Meanwhile, 16 other items related to the selection of teaching staff could not be discussed owing to the election code of conduct. The important issue about the appointment of the boards of committees was also postponed.

According to the MSU handbook, a statutory committee is constituted by the vice-chancellor and the pro vice- chancellor as per the resolution passed by the Syndicate members. However, this time the Syndicate members want to form the committee on their own as the body is dominated by a group, which is at loggerheads with the vice-chancellor.

Goyal refused to comment on the issue, saying the matter is scheduled for discussion at the next meeting and until then the old committee will continue to function. Elsewhere, Syndicate members said they will have a major say in the appointment of several committees.

The Syndicate did not approve the Rs 33 lakh fund by ISRO towards a project on coral reefs to be jointly conducted by the departments of geology and botany. However, it passed the Rs 25 lakh fund given by the Tata Institute of Social Sciences for the Faculty of Social Work.
