Syndicate polls: Prof Ranjan Sengupta elected

Vadodara Professor Ranjan Sengupta, head of department (HoD) of Chemical Engineering, won the MSU Syndicate election by 30 votes in the first round of MSU Syndicate polls held on Saturday. While forms for the general category are being distributed, the list for the chosen candidates for the second round of Syndicate polls — to be held on February 21 — will be out on February 16.

There were two candidates for the HoD category —- Prof Sengputa and Dr Shanker Hotchandani from Baroda Medical College (BMC). Only HoDs from BMC are allowed to vote for the first round of election. Now, Prof Sengupta will represent academia of entire university, whereas the other 14 Syndicate members will be for the general category.

During the first round, there were 49 HoDs, of which two were absent. While Prof Sengupta got 30 votes, Prof Hotchandani secured 17.

In total, there are nearly 25 Syndicate members, of which four are government nominees, three are government officers, one is from the HoD category, Vice-Chancellor, Pro Vice-Chancellor, members nominated by the V-C. The other 14 belong to the general category.
