V S Gohil, the policeman accused in the Naroda Gam massacre case, has moved a bail application before the court of Sessions Judge A K Aswani.

The Metropolitan Court had earlier remanded Gohil in judicial custody, whereas, in the same matter the Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT) has moved a revision application before the Sessions Court demanding police custody of the accused.

Gohil was the investigating officer in the Naroda Gam massacre case and is facing serious allegations of dereliction of duty.

According to an SIT official, Gohil has been accused of not recovering bodies from the massacre sites for two days, not visiting the scene of crime for two days and not calling the Forensic Science Laboratory for investigation among other things.

He had allegedly also not videographed the massacre sites. Gohil was the Circle Police Inspector of Mangrol when he surrendered before the SIT on February 25.

The Metropolitan Court had rejected the SIT’s application to take him on police remand. The SIT had then filed a revision application challenging the order of the Metropolitan Court. The hearing on the revision application is scheduled for Tuesday.

Gohil, on the other hand, had moved a bail application before the Sessions Court through his counsel, Kinnar Shah.

“We have demanded his bail on the grounds that the accused is a senior police officer and will not run away. Apart from that, we have also contended that other officials who have been facing similar charges have been granted bail,” Shah said.
