New Delhi Had there been prizes for guessing Group B table-toppers halfway through the DSA senior division league, anyone saying Tarun Sangha must have raised a few eyebrows.

The club lead this season’s group of death comprising heavyweights like Simla Youngs, Hindustan FC, Indian Nationals, Shastri FC and Air Force, Palam. And their 2-0 victory over Shastri FC on Friday at the Ambedkar Stadium saw them finish more than half of their job through the league, as well as continuing their big-club hunting — after a 2-1 victory over Simla Youngs and a dominating 1-1 draw against Hindustan FC.

Despite missing more than they scored, Friday’s victory must have been pleasing for the club, coming as did riding purely on cleverly created openings. Figo and Henry Chukwukere Ndudirim rode their passing game to create and waste openings until the latter directed Mohammad Mokhtar’s cross from right past Shastri FC goalkeeper Mohammad Atif in the ninth minute.

Figo then missed an open net with the ball lacking direction minutes later, but the big miss came off the first move in second half — Figo, after a great solo run catching Atif on the wrong foot, hit the bar. Henry, however, consolidated with a spot kick after being brought down by Peter Oyeisi. Far from drawing inspiration, Figo kept on hitting and missing till the end — it just wasn’t his day.

For Shastri FC, there were no heart-stopping moments. Balkar Singh, Tathir Hossain, Neeraj Pal Singh and KC Ngaihte fumbled at the goalmouth while Delhi skipper Irfan Zaman failed to hold the midfield. Two clear opportunities went abegging too — Ram Chandra Deswal striking it wide and Ngaithe failing to reach a through ball.

Earlier, Simla Youngs beat Indian Air Force (Palam) 1-0 through Anil Oran’s strike.
