Teachers on strike today

Chandigarh Upset over the delay in action by the Cabinet on the MHRD notification regarding pay scales, teachers from Panjab University and colleges of Chandigarh, today held a rally in front of the office of DPI (Colleges), Punjab.

Addressing the rally, Dr Jagwant Singh, General Secretary, PFUCTO, said though the government was convinced by their arguments, the Finance department was trying to create confusion. He added that the pay scales of teachers are determined by the central pay commission.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Ronki Ram, Vice-President of the federation, urged Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal to notify the scheme soon and avail assistance from the Centre. It was also announced that the university and college teachers from across the state will cease work on Friday and hold a rally.

It was added that six regional rallies will be held at Chandigarh, Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Patiala and Bhatinda on March 2 and a 72-hour bandh will also be observed.
