The demands include an increase in the salaries of the Vidya Sahayaks to
Rs 5,000 from the present Rs 2,500; increase in the number of teachers to match the required teacher-student ratio; setting up of a separate Primary Education Board; centralising the recruitment of teachers; providing facilities like housing for teachers working in interior areas; free education for children of teachers; allowing leave travel concession (LTC) to be encashed; and free bus travel for Best Teacher Award winners without any limit on the distance covered.
Other demands include implementation of the 10-point programme charted out by the working committee of the Gujarat State Primary Teachers’ Federation; removing compulsion of computer training and examination for teachers; increasing participation of women from 30 per cent to 50 per cent;s and changing the financial year from the present April-March to January-December.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Narendra Modi announced his plan to set up the ‘Indian Institute of Teachers Training’ and a Children’s University in Gujarat at the inauguration of the Gujarat State Primary Teachers’ Federation Education and Research Centre in Gandhinagar. The centre has been constructed at a cost of Rs 4 crore.
Sops or promises
LK Advani, who was present at the inauguration, said if NDA comes to power, it will:
* Double the Central budget for primary and secondary education and healthcare
* Recruit 10 lakh teachers to achieve 100 per cent student enrolment and improving teacher-student ratio
* Ensure basic minimum infrastructure for Internet-enabled education in all schools in the country
* Ensure teacher training, welfare, social security and launch of Shikshak Awas Yojana, so that all teachers have housing facility
