Sukhbir and Capt Kanwaljit were in Bathinda to lay the foundation stone of the new building of Bathinda Central Co-operative Bank Limited.
The agitators, including a number of women, tried to force their way to the venue when Sukhbir was addressing the gathering, but were stopped by the police. Later, they staged a dharna in front of the bus stand.
“We were promised enrolment into Elementary Teachers’ Training (ETT) course, but nothing is being done to fulfill that,” said Bathinda district chief of the union Kulwant Kaur. She added that there are 3,175 such EGS teachers across the state.
Earlier, speaking on the occasion, Sukhbir said many posts were lying vacant in different departments and the government would soon fill them. Listing the “developmental works initiated by the state government”, Sukhbir urged the gathering to vote for the SAD(B) combine in the parliamentary polls.
Speaking on the occasion, Capt Kanwaljit alleged that out of Rs 71,000-crore loan waiver announced by the Centre, Punjab farmers got a relief of only Rs 503 crore, despite the fact that the state farmers contributed 60 per cent in terms of foodgrains. He advocated a slash in interest rates of loans to the farmers from co-operative banks.
