After the meeting, Dr M.S. Mahal, president, PAUTA, said, “We have registered are opposition with the VC and Dr Kang has assured us that even he is not in favour of giving up PAU’s research fields.” “We have also demanded that the state government should come clear on its plans on PAU. First they assure us that the state government will help PAU tide over the financial crunch. Then they say that PAU should look for ways — commercialise its land and all such things — to keep itself afloat,” said Dr Mahal adding, “In case, the government fails to keep its promises with PAU or decides to sell any of PAU’s land, we to protest the move tooth and nail.”
Harbans Singh Mundi and Lakhwinder Singh Sandhu, president and general secretary of PAU Non-Teaching Employees Unon, said, “Our non-teaching staff working on Laddowal farm came to meet us and we have apprised the V-C of the concerns voiced by them. We have very clearly told the VC that we are with our colleagues at Laddowal farm and we will agitate if the government forces PAU to give up the land. The state government has uprooted the sugarcane research people thrice in the past and we will not let them do it again.”
Meanwhile amid all this controversy, PAU VC Dr M.S. Kang has appointed a, “feasibility committee which will be headed by dean, post graduate studies, Dr S.K. Mann to look into the issue of commercializing PAU land.” Dr Kang added, “Though we need money, but even if we commercial all the land that falls on the Ferozepur Road and all it gives us in return is Rs 10 crores. This fund is not enough to tide over the crisis. We need at least Rs 100 crores and I do not want to waste any of the assets of PAU if they do not yield the required results,” said Dr Kang.
