NOIDA Returning home after a shopping trip to the Great India Place mall in Noida’s Sector-39, an 18-year-old management student from South Delhi’s Lajpat Nagar was allegedly raped by 10 youths in Noida on Monday night.

The victim was accompanied by a male friend when the incident occurred, sometime after 5 pm, as per the complaint.

According to the FIR lodged by the friend, 10 men on motorcycles intercepted the car in which they were traveling. The incident took place in Sector 39, not far from the Great India Place mall.

Five of the accused were arrested within 12 hours of the incident and a hunt was on for the others, Noida police said. The accused are between the ages of 18 and 25. Several of them are students of Inter College, Noida, the police said.

According to the FIR, the men, riding three motorcycles and carrying cricket bats and stumps, overtook the Wagon-R the victim was in, and forced it to stop. “It was around 5 pm when the boys starting troubling us,” the woman’s friend wrote in the FIR registered at Sector 39 police station. “They overpowered us and hit us with cricket bats and stumps and snatched our mobile phones.”

The assailants then took the car to a jungle nearby and raped the teenager, the complaint says.

SP (City) Ashok Tripathi, however, said the arrested men had told the police that they abducted the woman from Pushta Parthala, where she was sitting and chatting with the friend. “The men were returning from village Pachota, Bulandshahr, after playing a cricket match. On the way, they saw the two and raped the woman in the fields,” Tripathi said.

Police have also detained the brother of one of the accused, who is a driver with a senior police official. This man told Newsline: “My brother, whose name is Little, and his friends kidnapped the girl and raped her in the woods near Parthala. He is absconding; I have no idea where is he hiding.”

All the arrested persons belong to Garhi Chowkhanda village in Sector 58. Police identified them as Pushpendra, Srikant, Sanjay, Sudhir and Gautam. Two motorcycles, a Pulsar (UP 16 L 4619) and a Splendor (UP 16 B 5540) have been seized.

Tripathi claimed credit for the “commendable job” the police had done in arresting the suspects soon after the complaint was filed. “The FIR was registered around 1.30 am,” he said. “The newly appointed Senior Superintendent of Police, Naveen Arora, directed the police to form teams and arrest the criminals.

“The act of acting swiftly and arresting the accused so soon is a commendable task.”

SSP Arora was not available for a comment.

AMEND THE LAWS! by RKM on 09 Jan 2009

AMEND THE LAWS!

The situation is alarming!!! by RKM on 09 Jan 2009

What a horrifying incident! Our security is deteriorating day by day!The incident took place around 5 P.M. near GIP, Noida. I'd expect a lot of public to be around and in fact a Police Chowky is very close to GIP… I really don't understand how come the whole matter couldn't reach the Police for an immediate strict action. It's as simple as dialing a number 100. Isn't it?We desperately need to revisit the laws pertaining to such crimes…amend, ameliorate, and edify the citizens of India as appropriate. Not just the laws be revolutionized, but also the citizens of India are required to unite and support police and law in combating and putting a dead-end to such serious offenses!Request everybody not to loose the momentum, not to retreat…join hands for a permanent way out.-RKM

Punishment for rapist by Ishraque Khan on 07 Jan 2009

This is really very sad. Persons involving in this crime should think that if the same tragedy happens with their mother, sister, wife, or daughter, will they welcome it. If not, they should not involve in this kind of crime. And to stop these criminals govt. should make the tough laws as for terrorism because this terrorizes society. Stoning to death at public place can only be the punishment for these criminals so that whenever anyone thinks about this heinous crime he should also think about the consequences if, by any chance, caught guilty.

Pathetic !! by mak on 07 Jan 2009

Its a pathetic law system we have in place...Iam pretty sure the culprits will come out clean... the best way to deal with these guys is to do an encounter like the Andhra police... otherwise many more similar incidents are gonna happen !!
