The teenagers were found in a village 20 km from Gorakhpur and were brought to the Capital this morning, Delhi Police Commissioner Y S Dadwal said at a press conference on Tuesday.
The incident hit the headlines in the Capital last month after the teenagers went missing from their residences in New Sanjay Amar Colony near Karkadooma Court in East Delhi on February 10.
Though locals claimed they were kidnapped, police said investigations have revealed that two boys and two girls in the group “were in love and had eloped”.
“Four in the group have claimed that they had married. One of the six is an adult. We are going to send the five minors to a rehab centre, while the sixth will be taken to court,” a senior police officer said.
The officer added that five of them are Class VI students at Sarvodaya Bal Vidyalaya in Vishwas Nagar in East Delhi. The children had told their parents that they were going to school and would go for an outing after that.
Police had registered two cases of kidnapping on February 11 and 17 and investigation was on. “One of them had called home sometime ago. We tracked the call to a public booth in Gorakhpur. Our investigations there led to the children,” Dadwal said. Local residents claim around 20 children have gone missing from the area since 2002. Ram Kumar Dhingan, who runs an NGO Punya Bhumi Bharatiya Manj in the area, claimed he has a list of over 20 children who have gone missing from the same locality in the past few years.
