The news of the infant’s death sparked off tension at the Ram Krishna Mission Seva Pratisthan (RKMSP) on Monday morning.

Orchid Dutta, a resident of south Kolkata near Dhaka Kalibari, was admitted to the paediatric ward of the hospital on February 19 after running high temperature.

The relatives of the patient alleged that since the time of his admission the doctors failed to detect his disease and instead assigned the case to junior attendants.

“Right from the beginning the hospital authorities left my son at the mercy of junior nurses and doctors. Treatment was never proper and he kept suffering,” said Goutam Dutta, father of the victim. “Nurses made multiple channels on his right hand for administering saline. On Monday morning they poured freezing water on him to bring down his high fever,” he added.

As news of his death spread, angry relatives staged a demonstration in front of the hospital, prompting its authorities to call the Tollygunge police station. A police picket was stationed at the hospital to defuse tension.

“We tried our best to save the infant, who was a congenital patient. The allegations made by his family are baseless because there was no negligence on our part,” said Maharaj Swami Sarbolokanada, secretary of the RKMSP.

Later, angry relatives put up a road blockade in front of the Tollygunge police station.

They were demanding an action against the hospital.
