Kolkata Tension prevailed at a hospital in south Kolkata on Wednesday after a patient went missing from the hospital premises. Sambhu Debnath, 55, was admitted to the Chittaranjan Seva Sadan at Hazra on February 5. However, he went missing from the hospital yesterday and till now his family has not heard from him. A diary was lodged with the Bhowanipore police station yesterday evening.

A resident of Mahisgote in Joynagar, Debnath was admitted to the hospital as he is suffering from throat cancer.

His relatives claimed that in spite of being admitted to a pay-bed, the nurses did not take care of him. Himadri Nath, a relative of the patient, claimed that the hospital authorities had not informed them about Debnath’s disappearance. “He went missing and the hospital authorities did not even inform us,” he said. They alleged that the police had refused to lodge a complaint.

The relatives also threatened to damage the hospital furniture and the police had to be called in. Jaydip Biswas, Director, Chittranjan National Cancer Institute (CNCI), said that an inquiry committee has been formed to look into the matter.
