Varanasi, January 11 The crown prince of Thailand, Maha Vajralongkorn successfully flew a Royal Thai Airways plane from Bangkok to Varanasi today.

The crown prince, who is also a military officer and a qualified helicopter pilot, successfully landed the plane at the Lal Bahadur Shastri Airport here at 3.05 pm (IST). There were at least 20 others who accompanied him in the aircraft. “The prince wanted to test his flying skills by landing a civilian plane at a small airport, which is why he made the planned landing here today,” said ADM (Protocol) A K Pandey.

Varanasi Divisional Commissioner Nitin Ramesh Gokarna, District Magistrate Veena Kumari Meena and SSP S B Shirodkar awarded the crown prince a warm welcome at the airport. Within an hour, the prince flew back to Bangkok.

Officials said the Thai prince would fly an aircraft to Gaya, a famous Buddhist pilgrimage site, a few days later.
