“It can only be felt,” she says visibly mesmerised by her recent sabbatical.
Aman, along with her lawyer husband Harpreet Singh Sandhu and two daughters, four-year-old Sehar and 18-month-old Ambar, has fond memories of the trip they went on in June.
The holiday included visits to places like Czechoslovakia, Switzerland, Germany and Dubai with the German Black Forest being at the centre.
“We are regular with holidays but going out with children is a totally different experience. For our recent vacation, we decided not to stay in a hotel and avoided going through a travel agent, for we wanted to stay away from the typical tourist spots. Luckily, we have relatives in Frankfurt who suggested this place to us and we drove down from there,” Aman recalls.
The Black Forest is a wooded forest range in Baden Wuttemberg, Southwestern Germany. It is bordered by the Rhine Valley in the west and south.
Aman gives us some bits of information about the place.
“The popular black forest cake gets its name from here. The colour of the soil is dark and the vegetation is darkish green. Out there, it is quite common for elderly couples to rent out beds and provide breakfast so we stayed with this very kind couple in this small village. It is a unique experience of getting to stay in a home-like atmosphere and at the same time, get the feel of living with a typical German family. They are quite fond of embroidery and flowers.”
The main idea of a holiday for the Sandhu family is “getting to enjoy some time far away from the hustle and bustle of the commercial world”.
She adds: “Europe is an expensive place so we wanted to make most of the break that we had on hand. Taking the kids along was a great idea as Germans, who are usually considered to be reserved, opened up to us. The moment my daughters would smile at someone, they would come over and start chatting. In short, the very concept of a holiday changes when kids are with you. As grown-ups, we often tend to miss out the finer things of life which kids remind us. They help us slowdown a bit and enjoy the beauty of nature around us. This is one holiday I think I will never be able to forget and all I can say is that it can never be expressed but only felt.”
