Pune, February 24 The Iyer couple had a glint in their eyes , full of gratitude, towards those generous people who donated them cash, at their residence at Padmavati slums on Sunday. The group is part of the city's most active Writers’ Club. A majority of them are senior citizens and are regular letter writers to The Indian Express.

When the group read the story titled “Fighting odds, couple shapes the life of poor kids” which appeared in The Indian Express on February 13, they wasted no time in deciding to offer financial help to the Iyers. Anand Gopal, a private serviceman said, “This amount is just a drop in the ocean.” He said he would write to industrialists, who will help provide them a bigger accommodation so as to continue their relentless task of teaching.

Also, among those who assisted the couple with monetary help was Vijaya Rajgopalan, a housewife who lives in Chinchwad's HDFC Colony. “I keep doing some kind of help on my part to those in need,” she said.

Those who have offered a helping hand include: Indira Raghavan, freelancer, P N Kumbhare, vet surgeon, Rear Admiral (Retd) Ganesh K Srinivasan, additional income tax commissioner, Anand Gopal, private service, Murli Chari, insurance, Uma Ranganathan, principal of Kalpana English medium school, Nigdi, Jagmander Goel, Garment dealer, Jayshree Sainath, homemaker. The one who took the initiative to bring the Writers’ Club members together and to donate to this noble cause is Indira Raghavan. She is a passionate writer in the English newspapers in the city. Fondly known as didi within the Writers’ Club, she writes fervently whether it is about water, traffic problems, or other issues and raises her voice against such problems.
