Kolkata * Peace Haven (7.30 am): The body of Jyoti Basu left Peace Haven on Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Road at 7.30 am in a hearse. CPM leader Md Selim and Basu’s longtime aide Joykrishna Ghosh accompanied the hearse along with a police convoy. The convoy took AJC Bose Road to reach Alimuddin Street CPM headquarters.

* Alimuddin Street (8.10-9 am): Party workers, CPM leaders Prakash and Brinda Karat, Biman Bose, Nirupam Sen, Tripura CM Manik Sarkar and Kerala CM V S Achutanandan paid tributes to the departed leader. Basu last went to CPM headquarters on February 21, 2009. From Alimuddin Street, the body came out in a specially designed lorry with placards, posters and news clippings and photographs of Basu. CPM leaders like Tarit Topdar and Amitava Nandy joined Md Selim and Joykrishna Ghosh on the lorry with the body.

* Writers’ Buildings (10-10.06 am): Hundreds thronged galleries of the Writers’ Buildings while others climbed the roof to catch a glimpse of Basu. CM came out at 9.50 am to wait for the procession. As the body arrived, CM climbed the lorry and paid his tributes. The convoy left the Writers’ at 10.06 am for the state Assembly.

* Legislative Assembly (10.46-3.29 pm): Thousands lined up as the convoy passed through Netaji Subhas Road, Council House Street and Esplanade Row West to reach the south gate of the Assembly. The body remained in the Assembly premises for nearly five hours. Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina and lakhs of people paid homage to Basu.

* Final Journey from Assembly to Mohur Kunj (3.29-4.28 pm): At 3.29 pm, the convoy emerged out of Assembly’s south gate in an Army gun carriage. People thronged Red Road, the 3 km stretch from the Assembly to Mohur Kunj. Many climbed the barricades on Red Road and perched themselves in galleries and roof of Akashvani Bhavan as the vehicle ferried the body and a band played. The final journey took one hour.

* Mohur Kunj (4.28-4.45 pm): The body was taken in the park where people paid tributes to Basu. The Last Post, which was followed by a 21-gun salute, started at 4.30 pm. After tributes were paid, the body was handed over to the anatomy department of SSKM Hospital. A K Mitra, head of the anatomy department of the hospital, and Pradip Mitra, director, SSKM hospital, received the body at 4.45 pm. Finally, the body was taken to the hospital located next to Mohur Kunj in the gun carriage.
