Said milk plant director, Ajmer Singh Bhagpur, “We have also introduced the concept of unpacked milk at the plant, a litre of which will cost Rs 19 a litre. We are passing on the packing charges to the customer”.
From March 1, private dairy vendors in the city have started selling milk at Rs 24-25 a litre.
Bhagpur denied that Verka was starting a price war.
“We already had this project in mind and it may be just a coincidence that it has come at this time. Shortly, we will also introduce a packing of 2.5 litre in both skimmed milk and 4.5 parts fat varieties. The 5-litre packing has been launched across the state at all dealer networks and milk plants. Unpacked milk will be available only at Verka milk plants”.
He said Verka has no plans of hiking milk prices as of now. Private dairy owners had contended that they were hiking milk prices considering the rising cost of fodder, wheat and cattle. Bhagpur, however, said that Verka is receiving 3 lakh litres of milk every day from dairy farmers as against last year’s average of 1.9 lakh litres a day.
