With the war for nursery admissions just starting in the city, Newsline looks at the issues and the numbers. Parents lament the lack of good public schools in the city. Schools say they have to eliminate and sort to maintain their exclusivity. The government has tried to regulate admissions by introducing a uniform pattern of admissions. But experiments met with protests from the school lobbies.

For every one seat in the nursery class in public schools, more than 20 children are seeking admission. At Modern School Vasant Vihar and its junior branch at Humayun Road, at least 5,000 parents applied for 120 seats on Saturday. South Delhi schools get the maximum number of applications. Last year, Amity International received 4,000 forms for 70 seats. Twenty per cent of nursery seats are under the management quota.

Twenty-five percent is reserved for the Economically Weaker Sections.

According to the Delhi Directorate of Education (DoE), there are 1,185 unaided public schools and 221 aided public schools recognised by the directorate in the city.

In addition, there are 759 unaided schools recognised by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.

The medium of education in most private schools is English. Schools in Delhi are run under the authority of either the Central Board of Secondary Education or the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations.

Stages of education are pre-primary, primary, middle and secondary.

While local bodies look after the education at the pre-primary and primary stage, middle and secondary is overseen by the Directorate of Education under the Government of Delhi.

Most good public schools in concentrated in South Delhi including Modern School Vasant Vihar.

Age for nursery admissions is set at minimum of 3 years. Most schools will admit 3 plus years to the pre-school class.

There are many big branded play schools in the city and they charge around Rs 40,000 for six months. Most guarantee parents their children will be able to get into good public schools.
