Chandigarh Chandigarh, our City Beautiful, is known for its wide variety of gardens — rose, fragrance, hibiscus — and its valleys, the most well known of which is Leisure Valley, famous as the venue of concerts.

But besides all these, there is another valley which has gone unnoticed. Yes, amid the hustle bustle of the city lies a Bamboo Valley in Sector 23A. A little difficult to trace, as there are no signboards, the valley is situated along the choe passing between the Children Traffic Park and the Government Model School.

Formerly known as ‘Aamleyan wala bagh’, the unutilised land was converted into a valley and inaugurated by General S F Rodrigues in 2007. Spread over 35 acres, Bamboo Valley has around 90 varieties of trees like aamla, akash neem, amaltas, mango, dek and mahogany. The area seems like a meadow with shrubs all around. Long bamboo sticks, drooping over each other, provides shade to the visitors.

Maintained by the Horticulture department, the valley has a lot to offer in terms of tranquillity, leisure and an opportunity to connect with nature. After the day’s hectic schedule, the fountains and the music soothe your ears and uplifts your mood.

Desraj, the caretaker of the valley, is optimistic. “Maintenance work is still in progress at present. But as soon as it is complete, this will emerge as a popular tourist destination.”
