Pune, aptly called the cultural capital of India, is about to ignite its seventh Shaniwarwada Dance Festival taking place over February 16 and 17.

The festival, flowering under the aegis of the Pune Festival, will see performances by the students of four dance academies, Kalanidhi, established by the luminous danseuse Yogini Gandhi, Kalavardhini, Academy of Indian Dances and Manisha Nrityalaya.

The unique aspect of this year's event is that it is being performed and organised by students. The trainees of Event Management Development Institute will organise the entire event.

This year's panel has eminent personages like Jackie Shroff, Manisha Sathe, Yogini Gandhi, Varsha Chordia and others to preside over the festival.

Shroff has requested the people of Pune to join in the celebration of local talent that is nationally acclaimed and respected. “There are so many dance schools in Pune and I think these people have done a great job of putting together an event dedicated to displaying the talent the city has", he said almost reverently.

This year Padma Vibhushan Sonal Mansingh and Abhijeet Pohankar will honor the festivity through Moksha – a three-segment jugalbandi of Odissi and new age music. "The performance is meant to encourage youth and bring classical music to them", said Pohankar.

(The tickets for the festival, are available at all Crossword outlets. )
