He has been awarded with two major awards, 'Tuka Mhane Award 2003' for his Marathi novel 'Bhadas' and state award for best feature film for 'Gabhara'. "A medium like theatre that can have a very strong narrative, is definitely bound to help and create awareness and senstivity amongst the people towards Dalit-related issues," says Sapkal, who has been to Karnataka, Tamilnadu, Kerela and Uttar Pradesh to understand the Dalit theatrical movement and its impact on socio-cultural fabric of those states. His work has been published by various publications in Marathi, like 'Marathi Chitrapatachi Patkatha' which is a literary criticism of screenplay in Marathi films, 'Peshwait milalela pndhra undir' a collection of short stories, 'Chatrapati Shahu Maharaj' biography for children and 'Hava aahe tari kashi' a science story for children.
"During my research I met various theatre personalities like Girish Karnad, Ratan Thyiyyam, Jabbar Patel and Dr Shriram Lagu and some of the eminent personalities from Dalit theatre like Datta Bhagat and Madhusudhan Gaikwad. This has contributed to my own intellectual growth and understanding of self. It has developed a socio-political consciousness and analysis of living conditions of the majority in our country," adds Sapkal when questioned about impact of his research on his own personality.
Dr Sapkal believes that his contribution as an academician will bring in change in the mainstream university syllabuses, which in turn will benefit students. His lectures and seminars are inspiring for students to take up various arts and research in various fields.
He is presently teaching Marathi literature in Fergusson College. "Dalit theatre has given a new dimension to folk art in India. We try to break caste hierarchy and I hope that through my work I reach out to maximum people and spread awareness about these theatrical activities," concludes Sapkal.
