Chandigarh, January 1 The last night of 2007 was marred by incidents of hooliganism and nuisance on city roads and at party venues. While the police resorted to cane-charge in Sector 17 Plaza to disperse the crowd, a large number of youngsters was seen indulging in traffic violations on city roads unchecked by any police official. The traffic police, however, claimed to have fined about 150 persons for violating traffic rules.

Chandigarh Police had to resort to lathicharge in Sector 17 Plaza.

“The crowd refused to disperse. As most of them were heavily drunk, they refused to listen to the police personnel and instead misbehaved with the police at certain places. When we dispersed them from the dance floor, they switched on music in their cars, parked in the parking lots and started dancing. There was no other option, but to resort to cane-charge so that the crowd could be dispersed,” said Inspector K S Pannu, SHO, Sector 17.

On the other hand, Sukhna Lake road (from Chandigarh Club to Sukhna Lake) remained jam-packed with vehicles, with music blaring and people sitting on top of their vehicles. “Nobody checked such violators. Police stood like mute spectators. Luckily, no mishap took place,” said Amit Khanna, a lawyer.

The night also saw thefts and burglaries taking place in the city. Burglars broke into a showroom, Ply Samrat, in Sector 22 C, and decamped with Rs 40,000 in cash from its cash-box. In another incident, about 1.5 quintals of iron-dies were stolen from Plot No. 34 in Industrial Area Phase-I. The city police have registered cases of burglaries.

Meanwhile, a resident of Patiala district, Tajinder Singh, was caught red-handed around 4 am while stealing a motorcycle (registration no CH-03-R-3837), belonging to one Pradeep Singh, a resident of Sector 39. A case was registered against Tajinder Singh on charges of attempt of theft.
