Student Social Responsibility Cell (SSRC) of Symbiosis Institute of Business Management (SIBM) gave up their demanding academics for a while and began the new year with the noble endeavor of promoting road safety in Pune. From January 1 to 4, they kicked off a month-long campaign on road safety by stationing themselves at major traffic junctions, and displaying banners with road safety messages to motorists whenever the traffic lights turned red. Motorists were awakened to the harsh realities of unsafe habits like not wearing helmets or not wearing seat belts. This was certainly effective as one could then see the drivers immediately reaching for their seat belts and two-wheeler riders promising to procure the head gear. The crew also gave away Thank you cards to all the people who wore the seat belt or who put on the helmet after reading the messages.
Around 35 volunteers from SIBM took part in this activity that spanned across four days at four major traffic junctions of Pune. The messages were communicated to over 5000 motorists driving through these junctions.
The road safety campaign is a pre-cursor to the DSK Toyota dream Run, a Pune marathon to be conducted by SIBM on January 27. Talking about the dream run, co-coordinator of SSRC Viraj Sholapurkar said," This is the second year that we are organizing this run. Last year it was designed keeping child issues in mind. This year it is road safety."
