Vadodara The Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) will unknowingly compromise with the quality of the housing society under construction at Kisanwadi under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) scheme – the reason being the theft of building material, which is at the mercy of two private security guards at the site.

Reliable sources have revealed that there have been growing incidents of theft at the site. However, the contractors are not willing to accept the reports of theft at the site .

“While iron and other building materials are being regularly stolen from the site, there have been a couple of incidents where large quantity of cement was taken out. The two guards are not in a position to guard the whole colony, and construction material is being regularly siphoned off," said a source at the VMC office.

While no official came on record admitting the irregularity, they said it will certainly affect the quality of the construction. "Technically, we are not supposed to guard the site as the contract for the same has been given to contractors and it is their responsibility to secure the material. But it would indirectly affect the quality," said an official.

"Under no circumstances will the contractor bear the loss. He will make it up by compromising with the quality. For example if 100 bags of cement are stolen from the site, instead of buying another 100 bags, the contractor will manage with whatever quantity he has been left with," he added.

JNNURM in-charge, Additional City Engineer K B Jaiswal, however, maintained that no such incident has come to his knowledge. "As per the tender, it is the responsibility of the contractor to protect his building material. As far as quality is concerned, we have our own officials as well as third party inspections to keep check on irregularities. We have not received any complaints so far as regards the quality of construction."
