At PGI, a baby boy was born at the stroke of midnight. Thirteen more babies — 10 boys and four girls — were born at the hospital during the day.
At the Government Multi-Specialty Hospital in Sector 16, as many as 14 babies were born till noon. Of them, nine were boys. The hospital’s first baby in 2009 was a boy born to Ranbir Kaur and Harbhajan Singh at 12.07 am. An elated Harbhajan said the family did not plan for a baby on January 1. “We are happy that my son is born on such a special day. It’s a perfect New Year gift for us,” he said.
The Government Medical College and Hospital in Sector 32 saw the birth of eight babies — five boys and three girls — till noon. The first New Year baby was born at 4 am.
Talking to Newsline, Dr Umesh Jindal of the Jindal IVF and Nursing Home said the trend of deliberately going in for a ‘New Year baby’ had substantially subsided. “This time there has been no case with us where the perspective parents have asked for a delivery on January 1,” he said.
