Gandhinagar, March 4 The state has seen a five-fold spurt in complaints of human rights violation in the last two years, according to a Home department document.

Prepared as part of a dossier on the rights related ground situation in the state, the document states that against 160 complaints received by the State Human Rights Commission in 2006-07, 1,000 were received in 2007-08.

Apart from being presented in the state Legislature, the figures would help the state officialdom brief the visiting UN team on human rights led by its special rapporteur Asma Jehangir next week (see box).

According to the document, of the 160 cases that came up for hearing in the reporting period of July 2006 to March 2007, the Commission, set up in July 2006, disposed off 112. Against this, 1,000 complaints were received between April 2007 and January 2008, of which the Commission has resolved 600.

The figures are part of a government document that details programmes for people's welfare to be carried out by the Home department in the year 2008-09.

The Commission was set up following pressure from various quarters, including the Central government and the National Human Rights Commission. While former justice D S Sinha is the chairman of the Commission, R L Meena is its secretary.
