These blind people were invited by Bharat Netarheen Sewak Samaj, a non-government organisation, for celebrating the birthday of Louise Braille, inventor of Braille system. Like other functions there was no commotion inside the shamiyana, where function was being held. All of them were silently working and making people aware about their achievements.
Poonam Sehgal, a 12th class pass housewife, who was in busy in stitching, said, “I do all the work on my own. I am here to tell the people that blind people are not dependent on anyone.” Seconding her point-of-view, Anil Sehgal, an employee at the health department, said, “Nothing is unachievable if one has the determination.”
While Iqbal Singh, a music teacher, who has been teaching at the blind school in Jamalpur, said, “I have taught music to both visually challenged as well as the normal children. The only difference is that one needs more time to make children learn who are visually challenged.”
Busy in knitting a colourful sweater, Rajinder Kaur a matriculation pass housewife said, “All these sweaters have been knit by me. I do all work at home.”
The duo of Satinder Singh and Gurvir Singh were playing chess and complimenting each other for playing better game. Gurvir Singh said, “I am doing diploma in computers and never felt handicapped. I think everyone is handicapped with one thing or the other.” While Satinder Singh, who is a class IV employee in health department, said, “I feel we are much better to the young people who are into drugs and other vices.”
Vishal Singh demonstrated how the handicap could not keep him from knitting the chairs. “I want to be a ragi singh and presently sings shabads in a gurdwara,” he said.
Talking to Newsline, Davinder Singh, president of Bharat Netarheen Sewak Samaj, said,”The year 2009 will mark the 200th year of birthday of Louise Braille. So we will hold exhibitions at many other places next year to mark the event.”
Bharat Netarheen Sewak Samaj meanwhile urged the government to make a monument in the memory of Louise Braille and also announce a holiday on her birthday. It also demanded that more and more vocational courses should be introduced in the blind schools.
