Nawanshahr/Kapurthala Three persons were killed in two accidents today, with scores of injuries reported as well. Two persons were killed and 11 injured when two buses collided head-on in Nawanshahr this morning.

Eyewitnesses said a private bus driving along the Jalandhar side of the road was attempting to overtake a vehicle near Mahalon village when it hit a Punjab Roadways bus approaching from the opposite direction. Manjit Singh, the driver of the private bus, was booked in the case.

Fifty-year-old Makhamal Kaur died and 15 others were seriously injured in a head-on collision between a Tata 407 and Tata 207 today on the Jalandhar-Amritsar Highway, near Ramidi village in Kapurthala district. The 407 collided with the 207 when attempting to overtake another vehicle. The deceased was a resident of Preet Nagar in Jalandhar and was headed to Dera Beas.

Police took three and a half hours to free the 407’s driver from the badly damaged vehicle. Thick fog may have played a role in the accident, which snarled traffic on the highway for two hours. Injured parties are being treated at hospitals in the region.
