Kolkata The Special Task Force (STF) arrested three persons on Sunday and recovered fake currency worth Rs 4,92,000 from them. The trio — Islam (42), Rabiul (32) and Muzibar Sheikh (25) — was later produced in the magistrate’s court which remanded them in police custody till January 31.

The three Malda residents posed as businessmen and were reportedly lodged in a hotel in Kyd Street from where they were arrested around 8 am today. The trio has confessed to having circulated fake currency worth nearly Rs 8,000 in the market, said a senior police officer.

Deputy Commissioner (STF) Pranab Kumar said the paper and printing quality of the fake notes is similar to that of original notes, but the portrait of Mahatma Gandhi in the fake notes is different.

The three were agents of a Bangladesh-based racket involved in circulation of fake currency in Indian markets, said the officer.

In another case, one Soumyo Chowdhury, 27, was arrested from Fancy Market on charges of circulating fake currency. A resident of Birbhum, he allegedly produced 24 notes of Rs 500 denomination while making the payment for a phone at a mobile phone store. Fake currency worth Rs 29,000 was recovered from him.
