Three members of a family were killed while one was injured after their two-wheeler was hit by a truck near Dugri this afternoon.
After the accident, truck driver Rachpal Singh fled away from the spot leaving behind his vehicle.
The deceased were identified as Amar Singh (65), his daughter Mandeep Kaur (32) and her son Prince (7). Amar Singh's wife Harbans Kaur, who was also on the two-wheeler, had a narrow escape. The victims are residents of Raikot.
The incident occurred around noon when the victims were coming towards Ludhiana from Raikot on a scooter. While Amar Singh was driving the scooter, his wife Harbans Kaur and daughter Mandeep Kaur was riding pillion and Prince (Mandeep's son) was standing in the front of the scooter.
Sources said in an attempt to save his scooter from a rehra, Amar Singh lost balance and fell on the road. Three of them were crushed by the truck and died on the spot while Harbans Kaur fell on the other side of the road and escaped with minor injuries.
Sources said that as the work to widen road was in progress, there was a heavy flow of traffic on the road.
Though the driver fled from the spot, police managed to arrest cleaner Tanay Singh.
The police have impounded the truck and registered a case against Rachpal Singh and Tanay Singh for causing death due to rash and negligent driving.
