Kolkata Five persons, including three Nigerian nationals, have been arrested for their alleged involvement in a credit card fraud amounting to Rs 24 lakh. The accused are Peter Orenabi Olunwagbenga, Benson Oladetam Adams, Leena Orenabi and two Indians — Manish Agarwal and Ankik Shaw.

While Peter was arrested from the Kolkata Airport on Sunday night, the others were arrested from the Picnic Garden and Mullick Bazar areas of the city on Monday morning. The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, Bankshal Court, later sent the five to 14 days’ police custody till March 22.

The fraud came to light when ICICI bank officials reported to the Detective Department of the Kolkata police, that they were receiving complaints from customers alleging that transactions were being carried out on their cards without their knowing.

Deputy Commissioner of Kolkata police Damayanti Sen said the gang employed a sophisticated modus operandi to carry out the fraud.

“For accessing the details of the card holder, the gang used the bank’s website,” said Sen, adding that the culprits mostly bought gold and electronic gadgets.
